‘Stargate’ Is Getting A Rebooted Trilogy, Will Smith Might Be In ‘Independence Day 2’, Claims Roland Emmerich

Director Roland Emmerich is making big promises again. In an interview with Digital Spy (video below), he not only says Stargate is going to be rebooted as three new films, but he also says Will Smith may have changed his mind about Independence Day 2. This comes after saying a few months ago that Smith was too expensive for the sequel.

On the Stargate trilogy, Emmerich says it had to be a reboot because the actors “look totally different”, and he adds, “We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot… and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts. Pretty soon we’ll have to look for a writer and start.”

Regarding Independence Day 2, we’ve already heard Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman would return for a story Vulture says “will focus on present-day Earth, when the aliens return and a younger generation is tasked with fighting them off.” The sequel was originally planned for the 19th anniversary of the first movie (July 3rd, 2015), but now Emmerich says it’s pushed to 2016. He also tells Digital Spy he and Will Smith “have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen.”

With Emmerich, we won’t believe any of this is real till it’s in theaters, and maybe not even then. Still pretty sure 2012 wasn’t a movie, you guys.
