"Starhawk": Initial Impressions

I’m wondering whether to bother writing a full review, because this game is so blatantly designed to be a multiplayer experience it’s not even funny. As I’ve said before, I don’t play multiplayer, both because I am a back-shooting dirtbag (and thus people who enjoy multiplayer hate me for excellent reason) and frankly I don’t have the time.

But, still, there are things to like here, three hours in. This is another attempt to mix third-person action with real-time strategy, which is called “Build-n-Battle” here, which is why you don’t let the marketing department name features.

One thing I was concerned about going in were the controls, since RTS and third-person shooters tend to have different designs. But so far, they’re smooth and easy to use. Flying, which is usually where a lot of games trip up, makes sense and is a lot of fun. And you get to fly a transforming mech; really, there is no bad in that sentence.

That said, the difficulty seems kind of light, even if vehicles don’t seem to last very long. Also, it’s hard to drop something heavy on your enemies from a great height, and let’s face it, that’s something we’re all going to try at some point.

We’ll have a full review later this week.
