I have to admit, I’m always a big fan of the old-fashioned SF that reads more like an adventure game script than an actual plot. A big part of science is poking around and seeing what happens, especially what happens if you mix something with something else to see if it blows up. That’s kind of rare in science fiction these days, so it’s a lot of fun to see a book that consists almost entirely of looking around a ship with some cool stuff in it and seeing what’ll happen, and that’s pretty much “Rendezvous with Rama” in a nutshell. Not the greatest prose, but really neat ideas.
There was supposed to be a big-budget “Rama” movie, directed by David Fincher and starring Morgan Freeman, but unfortunately that looks like it’s not working out. So pretty much the closest we’re going to get is this student film trailer with effects by Aaron Ross.
If we didn’t know better, we’d say this was actually a trailer for a Sci-Fi Channel miniseries or something, it’s that good for a student film. And no, that’s not a backhanded compliment. Check it out under the jump:
