MacGyver-Approved Thai Flood Hacks

Head Of Publishing

If you’re like me and keep yourself a little too insulated from all the depressing world news out there you may not even realize that northern Thailand and parts of Bangkok have been experiencing severe and ridiculous flooding since the end of July. I could attempt to lay out all the specifics here but you’d be much better served to just consult Wikipedia. Big stats: 506 reported deaths, 2.3MM people effected, $5.1B in damages, and approximately 6 million hectares (1 hectare = 10,000 square meters) of flooded area. So yeah, not good. Not good at all.
But as Thai Flood Hacks — a Tumblr operated by a rather anonymous Jan in Thailand — so concisely reminds us in their tagline: “Necessity is the mother of invention.” They’ve collected some rather amazing photos of ingenious MacGyver-approved hacks like the oil barrel/garden pump jet ski above the Thai people have engineered to adapt to life during flooding. My absolute favorites to follow.
I’d also like to take a moment to remind any weather gods taking out their Hangover 2 disappointment on the people of Thailand that misplaced aggression is seriously uncool.
I have no idea if these work but wish I had been there when they tried the first time.
Flooded. Women. Be. Shoppin.
Not to be confused with Bottle Banana Boat…
Not as funny as a grown man on a mini-tryc, but far more effective.
Gotta keep moral up.
It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, amirite?
“Yo dawg, I heard you like to jump scaffolding on your motorbike so we put a scaffolding in your motorbike.”
Somehow less demeaning to drive than a standard rickshaw.
Tom Cruise called, he’ll take your entire inventory.
Quite possibly the most important hack of all.
Second most important.
Not a cat person, but approve.
If only Billy Mays was still with us.
