The First Disney-Approved ‘Star Wars’ Novel Confirms Stormtroopers Aren’t Clones

As you may recall, there was a bit of an Internet kerfuffle when the Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser revealed John Boyega will be playing a stormtrooper, because dammit, stormtroopers are clones! Yup, that was totally the only reason people got upset. Totally. John Boyega himself took it in stride and told Star Wars fans to just get used it, and now it turns out the anti-black stormtrooper camp has even less of a leg to stand on.

The first official Star Wars novel published under the new Disney regime has been on shelves for a little while, but somebody just found a factoid in it that blows the clones thing out of the water. In one scene mid-way through A New Dawn: Star Wars, we’re introduced to a female stormtrooper…

A New Dawn: Star Wars takes place between Episode III and IV, so there were non-clone stormtroopers decades before the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and thus there’s no canonical reason to be upset about John Boyega as a stormtrooper, you monsters. Also, lady stormtroopers are now a thing – consider me deeply intrigued.
