Holy mother of god is this scary. I don’t have much context for this video, which was posted to YouTube earlier this week, so I can only assume the cyclist known only as “Anthony” — who was supposedly going 50 km/hr when he hit an aluminum bar on the course of a cycling road race — is OK. There was a separate video posted that showed the condition of his bicycle, so I can only assume he came out at least partially unscathed.
Cycling is a sport not for the faint of heart. I had a friend in college whose sister was a Pan American Games gold medalist training for the Olympics who tragically died when her bike went off course and she hit a tree. For these athletes, the only thing between them and the road at 30+ MPH is some foam and a polycarbonate shell. Just terrifying to think about.
