Duncan Jones To Direct ‘Warcraft’ Movie, Johnny Depp Wanted To Star

A movie adaptation of World of Warcraft has been in the works since 2006, with Sam Raimi attached at one point. Now a new director has been hired, and he’s the guy you might remember from Moon, Source Code, and David Bowie’s balls. Yeah, we couldn’t even get through the first paragraph without mentioning Duncan Jones’ rockstar dad. Anyway, Jones is Legendary Pictures’ pick to direct their script from Charles Leavitt, with a planned release date of 2015.

While Moon had a budget of $1 million and Source Code had a $35 million budget, Warcraft is likely to cost more than $100 million. Good luck getting WoW fanatics pried away from the computer long enough to watch a non-interactive version of Warcraft, guys.

At least Duncan Jones seems to be taking it seriously. He tweeted a foreshadowing statement two weeks ago.

“So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. Ive always said its possible. Got to DO it now!”

We don’t know what part of the enormous Warcraft universe the movie will cover, but Blizzard’s Chris Metzen said back in 2007 that the current script took place a year before World of Warcraft and might include Cairne Bloodhoof, Thrall, Gentrify Bundestag, and Bolvar Fordragon. I made one of those names up.

Meanwhile, The Tracking Board says “there is interest for Johnny Depp to star.” Uh, do any examples exist where there isn’t interest for Johnny Depp? I mean any instances in life, ever? I can’t think of any.
