Remember when Lil Chuckee was allowed at the YMCMB parties? Remember when Nicki’s torso still seemed based in terrestrial genomes? Reminisce with us as we stroll down memory lane to a happier era in Young Money history for a song and video that blew the emerging label into new heights and lawsuits. YMCMB’s “BedRock” was more than just a mansion party with a few talented friends – it was the introduction to the lifestyle of young, rich entertainers who knew how to pillow fight, smash groupies and build hit records like a young Berry Gordy.
Some of the track’s contributors went on to achieve great fame and notoriety, seeing platinum records in every continent and million dollar festival appearances. Others, continue to carry Weezy F’s bags up to the hotel room and go on condom runs for their boss (we see you Gudda).
The track also planted the seed for a dark amoure that would reveal itself numerous times across Aubrey’s career. While most fans gloriously trumpet the line, “but I can’t meet you in the lobby/ Girl, I gotta watch my back, cause I’m not just anybody,” without knowing its origins, it became the first of many lines that Drake would borrow from Aaliyah. Also of note is the reluctance of the 6 God to so much as glance directly into the camera lens as he adjusts to his newfound fame and notoriety in the YMCMB fold.
While Wayne spends the outro screaming about Young Lloyd, Jae Millz, Mack Maine, Gudda Gudda, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Lil Chuckee, T-Streetz and Tyga Tyga, two conspicuously absent members of YMCMB were left on the cutting room floor. Without a Birdman and Slim shout, the track still roars through speakers all over the globe to warm-up DJ sets everywhere but perhaps in a Freudian slip, Wayne knew what the future held. In recent months, the public spat between the two has grown increasingly ugly, with Birdman even tangled up in the legal investigation with conspiracy to murder his “son.”
Regardless of how all the drama turns out, Jay hit the nail on the head when he told us “it was all good just a week ago.” In a matter of years, the once loving family of artists and collaborators has turned into a dramatic family feud. Tyga publicly throws barbs at Drizzy, while Drizzy ignites an inferno underneath Nicki’s reported baby daddy and Lil Twist grew into a grown ass man on us without so much as an album dropping.
Cherish the moments you have with your friends because come hell or high water, once those platinum records got shipped, nothing stays the same.
