Watch Emma Watson Explain Why She’s A Proud Feminist To The United Nations

Emma Watson, who was named a Goodwill Ambassador over the summer, gave an impassioned speech at United Nations headquarters in New York this weekend about gender equality and feminism, two topics that I’m surprised the U.N. didn’t ask “bonerfiend69” on YouTube to discuss instead. Watson also launched her “HeForShe” campaign, a “solidarity movement for gender equality that brings together one half of humanity in support of the other of humanity, for the entirety of humanity.”

You might think: who is this Harry Potter girl? What is she doing at the UN? I’ve been asking myself at the same thing. All I know is that I care about this problem and I want to make this better. And having seen what I’ve seen and given the chance, I feel my responsibility to say something. Edmund Burke said all that is need for the forces of evil to triumph is for good men and women to do nothing. (Via)

She went on to say, “I want men to take up this mantle. So their daughters, sisters, and mothers can be free from prejudice, but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human, too — reclaim those parts of themselves they abandoned and in doing so be a more true and complete version of themselves.” Meanwhile, the guy who played Ron “bonerfiend69″ Weasley is at home, watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for the third day in a row on ABC Family.
