Consequences of driving under the influence can result in anything from a license suspension to jail time, depending upon a person’s level of inebriation, in addition to other factors. But one Kentucky couple received a special kind of punishment by getting attacked by an angry swarm of bees as a result of their infraction.
Thirty-five-year-old Noah Elkins and 35-year-old Priscilla Simpson, were driving through Laurel County in a pink Geo Tracker (that car alone brings back so many memories of college) looking for a place to go swimming, as they later told police. That’s when somehow Elkins, who later admitted to being under the influence of Suboxone, neurotin and Klonopin, lost control of the car and crashed into a pole.
As if the crash wasn’t bad enough, as it turns out the pole had a beehive in it, and their situation quickly went from bad to so, so much worse. Once the bees started to attack, the couple attempted to flee, running to bystander Gary Lee Anderson’s nearby home where they attempted to spray the bees off with a hose.
For his part, Anderson proved to be a hero in the situation — not for helping the couple — but for the above fantastic account of the incident he later gave to reporters.
I just had got done feeding my chickens, watering them and stuff, and I walked back to my house there to get my phone so I could play a video game on it. And all of a sudden I heard a big ‘boom,’ and I looked back out my door and the electric pole fell and the lines were falling. And the Geo Tracker was sideways into the fence.
And the guy came out, screaming and squalling, and running around about like a chicken with its head cut off. I told him, ‘You need to get out of that water.’ But I didn’t know he was getting eat up by bees, I thought he was just high.
The couple were eventually taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash in addition to the bee stings. In the mayhem, Anderson himself was stung a few times, and he thinks Elkins and Simpson must have really learned their lesson by now: “I’d say they’re itching real good. Because my ankle’s itching. I think it’s that poison from them bees.”
