‘Game of Thrones: The Movie’? Not so fast, says HBO head

That “Game of Thrones” movie George R.R. Martin keeps talking about isn't in the cards, says HBO CEO Richard Plepler – at least not yet.

“[Martin] is 100 percent focused on his books and his series and has only held out the movie concept as something way down the road,” said Plepler during today's HBO executive session at the Television Critics' Association Summer Press Tour.

Added programming prez Michael Lombardo, just in case there was any confusion: “There's no conversations going on about a movie.”

Martin has mentioned previously that he'd like to wrap up the run of the top-rated fantasy series (based on his “Song of Ice and Fire” series of novels) with a big-budget film, though fans (not to mention HBO execs) are probably more keen on him finishing the sixth entry in his long-running book series, “The Winds of Winter.” Indeed, the possibility that the show may actually outpace the storyline of the novels was also a subject of conversation at the panel, with Lombardo insisting: “We're not off on our own,” and continuing that at least for Season 5, every beat is being plotted out with Martin's input. That said, “After next year, we will have to figure it out with George.”
