The Drew League of South Central, Los Angeles is one of the coolest things for pro basketball players to do in the offseason. It now gets enough pros to be a legitimate way for them to stay fresh, make a highlight — or be the victim of one — and get a little street cred while you’re at it. So, how exactly did the Drew League get this way? Friend of DIME and South Central native Baron Davis co-directed a documentary to get to the heart of this very question, the trailer for which is above.
The Drew: No Excuse, Just Produce will debut at the L.A. Film Festival on Saturday, June 13, and it should hold great appeal for a certain segment of sports/film fans. Basketball as a means of escape from (or at least therapy for) poverty, drugs and crime has been fertile ground for documentaries as far back as Steve James’ classic Hoop Dreams in 1994 (if you haven’t seen it, and you love basketball, block out three hours and watch it), and The Drew promises to combine that theme with loads of star power. It should be just as fascinating as the Drew League itself.
