With Monta Ellis reportedly opting out of his contract and becoming a free agent, the Dallas Mavericjks are going to look elsewhere for a new starting two guard. One of their top targets, according to RealGM’s Shams Charania, is Danny Green of the San Antonio Spurs.
As Monta Ellis pursues a new deal on the east coast, the Dallas Mavericks are targeting San Antonio Spurs free agent Danny Green, league sources told RealGM. …Green has a strong desire to return to the Spurs, sources said, but free agency could hold more lucrative deals elsewhere.
Green wasn’t his usual sharpshooting self in the playoffs, making just 30 percent of his tries from deep, a dramatic decrease from his regular season clip of 41 percent. His value likely didn’t take a dramatic hit, though, and it’s very possible that he’ll command a contract that pays him 10 to 12 million dollars per year. Green is a near-elite wing defender, a blistering shooter and deft at cutting off the ball, all things deeply valued in today’s NBA (just don’t ask him to handle the ball).
As crucial as Green has been to the Spurs’ recent success, it’s hard to see the team letting him go, or Green going elsewhere. Still, don’t count out the Mavericks offering him a lucrative contract that the cost-conscious Spurs would be hesitant to match.
