Are Rival L.A. Gangs Competing To See Which Can Be The First To Kill 100 People In 100 Days?

Seven shooting incidents occurred in South Los Angeles this weekend, leaving one dead and 11 others injured, and a spike in shootings has many wondering if the recent rash of violence is tied to the hashtag #100Days100Nights on Twitter and Instagram. The trouble allegedly began after a member of the Crip gang Rollin’ 100s was murdered. Since then, the hashtag began popping up all over social media as an alleged war cry for gang members to engage in a contest of who could kill 100 people in 100 days, not to mention L.A. citizens concerned about the well-being of their city.

Los Angeles police officers are currently monitoring the hashtag to gain more information, but South Bureau Deputy Chief Bill Scott said that the killing contest may be more myth than reality.

“We are hearing that this is really not a valid posting,” Scott told the Washington Post. “This situation may just be a bunch of hype.”

L.A. Police Chief Charlie Beck noted recently that gang-related crimes are up 18 percent compared to 2014, and a peace rally was held in South L.A. on Monday night with activists calling for an end to the violence. As of Monday morning, no suspects have been corralled in connection with the violence over the weekend.
