What’s On Tonight: Pop Culture Nostalgia On ‘The Americans’ And A Controversial ‘Chicago P.D.’

Chicago P.D. (NBC, 10 p.m.) — Tonight’s episode has some potential for controversy (at least as much as possible in a network procedural). Burgess shoots a hooded perp she thinks fired at Roman. Unfortunately for her, the young boy she gunned down may not be the same guy who opened fire on her partner and when she testifies in court, the case spurs a #BlackLivesMatter protest. Heads up, this episode is also serving as a backdoor pilot for the latest in the Chicago series, Chicago Justice.

The Americans (FX, 10 p.m.) — The Americans isn’t afraid of incorporating nostalgic bits of pop culture every now and then. Tonight’s installment all but pays homage to a TV movie that, in many ways, cemented the power of television in the ’80s. That’s right, The Day After (that fictional nuclear war movie that starred John Lithgow and ended with the Midwest becoming a blackened wasteland) is the star of this episode. Maybe it’s just me, but something about watching two Russian spies sit down as a family to watch a film imagining the destruction of the country they’re plotting against sounds really fun.

Arrow (CW, 8 p.m.) — Noah and Oliver have a lot to talk about and Felicity turns to her dad for help when the team discovers Damien Darhk’s plan.

Heartbeat (NBC, 8 p.m.) — Alex’s dad needs a kidney. When an unlikely person volunteers to donate theirs, family secrets are exposed.

Rosewood (Fox, 8 p.m.) — An ATF agent’s murder is connected to a cold case that holds quite a few surprises for Rosewood and Villa.

Survivor: Kaoh Kong: Brains vs. Brawn vs. Beauty (CBS, 8:00 p.m.) — It’s torch out for another castaway.

The Middle (ABC, 8 p.m.) — When Sue and Axl refuse to give into the man  respect their curfew over summer break, Frankie comes up with a way to spy on them.

The Goldbergs (ABC, 8:30 p.m) — Beverly and Lainey partner for an important mission: the destruction of Barry’s ugly shirt.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (CBS, 9/10 p.m.) — An American college student working in Johannesburg is killed and his brother goes missing. When the team investigates, they discover a gang may be involved in both incidents. Later, the team tracks down spree killers in Cuba targeting Americans.

Empire (Fox, 9 p.m.) — Hakeem struggles to make his fiancée feel included in his personal and professional life as Cookie finally comes clean to Jamal about what really happened to Freda’s father, prompting him to warn her of his family’s scheming.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBC, 9 p.m.) — Tonight’s meta episode features the squad investigating the alleged rape of a reality TV star which forces them to participate in the show.

Modern Family (ABC, 9 p.m.) — The family takes a train trip for Dede’s wedding and chaos ensues. Claire and Mitchell try to craft a toast; Phil and Cam fangirl over a famous author on board; and Luke and Manny hit on girls.

Supernatural (CW, 9 p.m.) — After Dean learns of Amara’s torturous plans for Castiel, he concocts a plan (with help from Dean) to rescue the devil.

Maron (IFC, 9 p.m.) — Marc takes his rehab group on a trip to his old neighborhood.

Blackish (ABC, 9:30 p.m.) — Bow and Ruby get sick, leaving Dre to take care of the kids by himself. I think we all know how this is going to go.

Nashville (ABC, 10 p.m.) — Scarlett’s not a fan of Gunnar’s growing relationship with Autumn; Rayna tries to protect Maddie from the dark side of the music business; and somehow, Juliette meets Kesha.

The Last Panthers (Sundance, 10 p.m.) — Bosnia’s shaky cease-fire exposes a connection between Naomi and Milan.
