Last year, a group of former Rare employees unveiled Yooka-Laylee, a spiritual successor to classic N64 3D platformers like Banjo-Kazooie and Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Yooka-Laylee was a major success on Kickstarter, because darnit, some of us like googly eyes and collecting things, but games like Mighty No. 9 have proven nostalgia and heaps of fan cash aren’t always enough to produce a great game.
Thankfully, it looks like Yooka-Laylee is set to not only meet expectations, but exceed them. Yooka-Laylee developers Playtonic Games have just released a new trailer, and the game looks to be shaping up very well indeed. The game is colorful, detailed, varied and full of all sorts of weird little details (and yes, a few fart jokes). Yooka and Laylee also show off a couple new powers, including the ability to transform into a part-lizard, part-bat steam shovel.
In addition to the trailer, the folks at Eurogamer got to take the game for a spin, and capture a few minutes of gameplay. We get a nice look at a mine car challenge (of course there has to be mine cars) and some information on the game’s hub world, which grows and expands as you play through the game.
Man, the only thing that would make this better is if I could somehow play the game with my old N64 controller. Yooka-Laylee is scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2017.
