Drew Struzan painted awesome floating head-filled posters for pretty much every movie you liked from the 80s. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, Back to the Future, Rambo, uh, the Police Academy movies — he did it all. He continued working well into the 90s and 2000s, doing posters for the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Harry Potter movies.
Then he retired and the world of movie posters became a darker, more Photoshoppy place. But wait! The producers of Star Wars: Episode VII have contacted Struzan, and it sounds like he’s pretty open to being convinced to do posters for the new trilogy…
“You know, I spent 35 years painting ‘Star Wars’. I painted ‘Star Wars’ before most of you were born! But I guess there is always a chance. There’s no intention. But I would love to have a day off every now and again, and I have to work a weekend and all through the night. If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family. Away from the green trees and the blue skies for a change instead of just locked in the studio. But, you know, never say never. All things are possible.”
In other words, “all things are possible depending on how many zeroes Disney is willing to add to my check”. I have a feeling we haven’t seen the last of Stuzan’s floating Jedi heads.
