The Man Without Fear will fight again next year, as Netflix has ordered a second season of “Daredevil.”
Netflix’s plans for its five Marvel series have been unclear in terms of whether they would each be single-season shows, with the four solo acts – Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist – leading up to a Defenders team show, or if the early ones might get renewed in success. But “Daredevil” has obviously met whatever Netflix’s bar for success is – and even if we don’t have access to their data, it was awfully good from beginning to end.
The new season will debut sometime in 2016, and will have yet another showrunner. “Daredevil” started out as Drew Goddard’s baby, then Steven DeKnight took over, and the bosses in season 2 will be Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez, both of whom were writers and producers on this first season.
We still don’t know when “AKA Jessica Jones” will debut and how closely “Daredevil” season 2 will follow, but for those who really liked Matt Murdock and friends in their live-action incarnation, this is good news.
UPDATE: Getting a lot of concerned tweets and emails about the latest showrunner change. I’m not so worried yet. Goddard left to do a movie, and DeKnight is a busy guy who came in as a hired gun. He’s a talent, but I doubt he was forced out, as opposed to wanting to go do something else once his year was up.
UPDATE #2: In fact, Marvel’s version of the renewal press release has a quote from DeKnight: “While previous commitments unfortunately prevent me from continuing on with ‘Daredevil’ into its second season, I could not be happier that Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are carrying the torch. They were invaluable collaborators during our first season, and I for one can’t wait to see what they do with the show moving forward.”
