Urban fantasy is a fun sub-genre. All the magic of sword and sorcery combined with cell phones and GPS. “The Last Witch Hunter” goes all-in to this sub-genre in the final trailer as Vin Diesel sets out to destroy the unearthly witches that would wipe out humanity…again.
It”s no secret that Vin Diesel is a huge nerd. His love of table top game Dungeons & Dragons is well-documented, so it should come as no surprise this movie is going HAM on the lore. Check out the official synopsis:
“The modern world holds many secrets, but the most astounding secret of all is that witches still live amongst us; vicious supernatural creatures intent on unleashing the Black Death upon the world. Armies of witch hunters battled the unnatural enemy across the globe for centuries, including KAULDER, a valiant warrior who managed to slay the all-powerful QUEEN WITCH, decimating her followers in the process. In the moments right before her death, the QUEEN curses KAULDER with her own immortality, forever separating him from his beloved wife and daughter in the afterlife. Today KAULDER is the only one of his kind remaining, and has spent centuries hunting down rogue witches, all the while yearning for his long-lost loved ones. However, unbeknownst to KAULDER, the QUEEN WITCH is resurrected and seeks revenge on her killer causing an epic battle that will determine the survival of the human race.”
That sounds straight up like a Wizards of the Coast campaign book you could purchase from your local hobby shop. One for high level characters looking to stretch their legs (hint, hint Wizard). There”s even a huge lore database. You know, if you”re into that.
“The Witches Brood” dives deep into the culture of witches. Prominent people, secret locations, spell ingredients, and more. If you register for The Witch Council, you can even access secret areas!
What can I say? I”m a sucker for a good ARG (Alternate Reality Game).
“The Last Witch Hunter” also released a handful of character posters to accompany the new trailer. This fall, all will be tried.
“The Last Witch Hunter” arrives in theaters on October 23, 2015.
