Things are heating up in the world of “Game of Thrones.” From the Children of the Forest to the Others to Drogon”s rebellious teen years, there are plenty of candidates when it comes to staging epic battles. But perhaps no showdown will be as bloody and engaging to watch as the one between two women trying to protect their families.
Season six will pit Cersei Lannister against Olenna Tyrell, at least according to Dame Diana Rigg.
Speaking to Digital Spy about her upcoming project “You, Me, and the Apocalypse,” Rigg inevitably had to field a few questions about her role as the Queen of Thorns on “Game of Thrones.”
“I”ve got a head-on with Cersei coming up and it's really good.”
This battle of wills has been a long time coming. Lady Olenna has spent a good portion of her twilight years keeping her granddaughter safe from Cersei”s claws (and demented offspring). It was Lady Olenna”s meddling that ended Cersei in the dungeons as revenge for what the Queen Mother did to the Queen. While Margaery is more than equipped to handle herself, she learned her formidable skills at the feet of her grandmother.
But Cersei won”t go down without a fight. She”s not nearly as good at playing the game as she thinks she is, but she”s vicious and paranoid. Combining those traits with her perpetual short-sightedness could temporarily give Cersei the edge. When push comes to shove though? My money”s on the Queen of Thorns. Every time.
“Game of Thrones” returns to HBO in 2016.
