Melissa McCarthy reiterated on Howard Stern this morning that she was never asked back for the Gilmore Girls revival — and moreover, that she was as “surprised” about her exclusion from the series as the fans were. Here's the relevant portion from the interview:
Howard: They're talking on Netflix, you know what I'm talking about, they're gonna do a reboot of Gilmore Girls. But, are you in or are you out? What's going on with that?
McCarthy: I'm not in. But I'm pretty psyched to see it…I think they thought I was too busy, so, they literally didn't talk to me about it.
Howard: Are you insulted?
McCarthy: No, I was surprised by it. …But I'm glad they do it, because I get more questions about Gilmore. In every country, it's like, everybody asks about that show. Like, the fan base of that show is really remarkable.
Howard: So they're gonna do it without you…and you're not upset.
McCarthy: No. No, no, no. Not at all.
Whether McCarthy would have done the show if they had asked is an open question, but it's too late now in any event, as filming on the new episodes has already begun. It's curious, though, that they didn't even try to get her back.
