‘Star Trek Beyond’s’ dramatic trailer debuts Rihanna’s new single

Star Trek Beyond's trailers have been a mixed bag for fans of the franchise and the latest, which features a brand new song from Rihanna, is sure to be no different.

It's a much more dramatic trailer this time around, that's for sure. We get some heartstrings pulled with a quick glimpse of Chris Hemsworth's cameo in the 2009 film as James T. Kirk's father, and the new Rihanna song is not upbeat and dance-able like most of her hits but rather somber and epic.

What we don't get is a real look at Anton Yelchin's Chekov. Whether that's by happenstance, or whether Paramount and Justin Lin made a specific decision not to feature him so soon after his tragic passing, is unclear. Paramount pulled out of a fan Q&A last week out of respect for the actor.

I'm interested to see how Trekkers respond to the trailer being so heavily linked to a musician though. One thing's for sure: Rihanna is blending right into Star Trek canon with her poster announcing the song “Sledgehammer” (no relation to Peter Gabriel's song of the same name). It will be featured on the soundtrack but is currently available on Tidal and iTunes.
