It”s kind of shocking how little we know about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, considering we know how it ends. At some point, Princess Leia must come into contact with the Rebels that have Death Star plans, and Darth Vader will give chase. Rogue One ending with the Alderaanian ship being hounded by a Star Destroyer wouldn”t be out of the question.
But who are the rebels that make up the task force that infiltrates the Empire to steal the plans? We”ve met the crew, but know little about their motivations. Especially Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). From the trailers thus far, she is brought into the Rebellion under coercion. We”ve seen one reason she might decide to join the cause, but now the international trailer gives us another: her father.
This tidbit is fascinating because in previous trailers, Mon Mothma tells the audience that Jyn has been on her own since she was fifteen (unless this is a misdirect and Mothma is referring to another character). Where has Mr. Erso been if his daughter was raising herself? Did he infiltrate the Empire? Defect? Come in contact with the coded message some other way?
More importantly, does this mean Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) was sent specifically to recruit Jyn for the Rebellion? What does the daughter of their informer have that they need?
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story arrives in theaters on December 16, 2016.
