Adam Reed has just introduced us to the danger zone – the last seasons of FX's Archer. I swear to god I had something for this.
Back in June we found out Archer, which features the voice talents of H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Jessica Walter, Amber Nash, and Lucky Yates, had been renewed for three more seasons. Yay! But we've just found out those seasons will be its last. Boo!
Executive producer/writer Adam Reed guested on the Modern School of Film”s Murmur podcast and made it official:
The plan is to end Archer after Season 10. I don”t know that anybody has talked about that, but that is definitely my plan – to do 8, 9, and 10, and they”re gonna be each shorter seasons of just eight episodes – and then wind it up. … I was gonna end it after 8, but then I had sort of a brain explosion of a way that I could do three more seasons and really keep my interest up. So the three seasons that are coming up are gonna be pretty different from what has come before, and they”re gonna be different from each other.
Ok, ok, I'm fine. Less episodes sounds bad but tighter storytelling can be good and if Reed had a great idea on how to have them all play out, all better. The show recently won Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Series, it's first, but Reed wants to make sure they don't overstay their welcome.
“I do think that things can go on too long,” he told Murmur, “and maybe instead of just looking at the bottom line, maybe those creative energies could be better used coming up with something new rather than continuing the same thing.”
Archer joins another animated series, Pendleton Ward's Adventure Time, which also recently announced its impending 2018 finale. “I”m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long,” Ward said of the announcement. “It”s a special thing, I think.”
Personally I love it when shows get to go out on their own terms and as a fan, it's nice to be prepared for the end. What sort of wake do you think Archer will have?
