It seems like only yesterday that kids, adults, professional athletes and even Jay-Z were planking their meme-loving hearts out. Planking, of course, is the practice of laying completely still, as if one were a plank of wood. Alas, planking grew old, as these things tend to do, and much like the gastrotrich, this photography fad came and went. Soon after, Xzibit, ruler of all that is meme, declared his discontent with planking, owling became the next big thing.
Owling seems to have lasted an even shorter life than planking, though, and that’s why the present belongs to horsemaning — faked beheadings. (Your guess is as good as any as to how horses became involved in this.) The banner image dates back to the 1920s, when the most popular meme was pictures of kids with all 10 fingers. According to internet lore, the pic was recently discovered at a fleamarket somewhere (we’re skeptical, for the record), and since retro is the big thing these days, the kids, led by our pals at Buzzfeed, are bringing horsemaning back to the interwebs.
In order to properly horsemane, two people are needed. That is, unless you’re really willing to cut off your head. In that case, you’re a true artist. But if you’d like to stay alive, then you just have to lay back with your head out of view while a friend pops his or her head a few feet away. It’s a lot easier if I just show it to you after the jump.
