Ellen Page is going to return to the Kitty Pryde role in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, but we almost had a standalone Kitty Pryde movie. Back in 2009, Joss Whedon said he pitched the idea to the studio but, “They don’t seem to think that that’s awesome. I don’t know why.” Recently, Jason Reitman (Juno) said he’d been approached about making a Kitty Pryde movie with a script from Diablo Cody. That didn’t go forward either, but not from any resistance from Ellen Page, it seems.
In an interview with Vulture (via /film), Page was asked about Joss Whedon’s interest in a Kitty Pryde movie.
“I have heard that, yeah! Well, I’m available! [Laughs.] I love that. Kitty Pryde’s awesome. I’m super grateful to be the actress who’s gotten to be her, and you only desperately hope that the true fans who have a right to demand what they want and who have been passionate about these stories for a really long time, that you can pull it off for them. I would be so thrilled to play Kitty Pryde again. I really would.”
For now, she’ll have to settle for a starring role in a different comic book adaptation. She’s in talks to play the lead in Queen And Country, an adaptation of Greg Rucka‘s comic of the same name.
The story follows Tara Chace, a British Intelligence agent who tries to stop an international terrorist plot after her identity is compromised and as her personal demons spiral out of control. Sources tell Variety that Fox had long wanted give Page a franchise after working with the young actress in various Fox and Fox Searchlight projects. This property gives Page that and could do for Page what the Jason Bourne franchise did to lift Matt Damon’s profile. [Variety]
We take that to mean she’ll be replaced by Jeremy Renner in the sequel.
