Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader aren't known for their restrained screen presence, but in “The Skeleton Twins,” they come close to erasing to your memories of Gilly and Stefon.
In “The Skeleton Twins,” a hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival, the “SNL” veterans play estranged twin siblings who cheat death on the same day and find themselves reunited under extraordinary circumstances. Both characters are in dire need of healing, and they use a mixture of empathy and tough love to make that possible. It's touching and funny thanks especially to their sincere dialogue and glumly authentic performances. If you're still smarting from Wiig not getting an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in “Bridesmaids,” “The Skeleton Twins” is a confirmation of her versatile acting talents.
We chatted with Wiig and Hader to discuss their favorite surprising moments in the movie, their real-life sibling sensibilities, and the “SNL” hosts who shocked them most.
“The Skeleton Twins” opens wide September 12.
