Hey, remember when Marvel surprised us all by announcing The Inhumans were going to get their own television series on ABC but gave almost no other information? Well, we know they’ve got a showrunner now and he’s familiar with the Marvel universe.
The Hollywood Reporter says Scott Buck, who’s worked on Dexter, Six Feet Under and yes, is the showrunner on Netflix’s upcoming Iron Fist series (which we just got new images of today), will be leading The Inhumans. You may recall a version of the first two episodes will premiere in IMAX before the series heads to ABC in September 2017 with additional exclusive content.
While many Marvel TV watchers have come to know the Inhumans from Agents of SHIELD (where they’ve been worked into the story thanks to Terrigen Crystals), this series will not be a spinoff but rather feature the classic characters known from Marvel Comics lore. In their announcement, Marvel said it “will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.” They are still a race of genetically altered superhumans, however.
For a long time Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Vin Diesel had been expressing interest in playing Black Bolt though I’m sure he wasn’t thinking The Inhumans would bring him to television. Director James Gunn was asked to weigh in on this in a Facebook Q&A last month and said, “Unless Vin wants to take a huge pay cut and sign up to do a TV show it seems unlikely.”
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said, “I think it’s happening on television” when asked about the film that was originally planned, pushed back, then removed from their schedule so it remains to be seen if Marvel will see value in doubling up on properties considering everything else they have on their plate.
