The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a powerful phone. How powerful? So powerful you can essentially fit a beloved game console in your pocket, as a YouTuber recently figured out.
Specifically, the video’s creator used a popular GameCube emulator, Dolphin, and flawlessly managed to play Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, and The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker. For those unfamiliar, an emulator essentially creates another computer inside a computer, like a nesting doll. It’s especially useful for video game consoles, which tend to use custom hardware and custom code, but emulators have a hard job that doesn’t always translate well. Even the best emulators might make games technically playable, but not much fun, depending on the system. So that makes this video even more impressive than it first appears.
It also raises, for Nintendo, the pressing question of how and whether to start bringing its games to smartphones. After all, if an unofficial product — Dolphin is a labor of love — can do this well, Nintendo itself can almost certainly do better. And Nintendo’s recent moves into mobile gaming have been surprisingly popular. So, perhaps, the idea of an official GameCube in your pocket isn’t so far away.
