Netflix Cancels ‘Sense8’ After Two Seasons And The Fan Outcry Has Been Immediate

On Wednesday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings boasted that the streaming giant’s original programming division has been such a success that it’s been incredibly hard to cancel shows. Today, Netflix decided to issue their sparingly used cancelation stamp and seal the fate of one of their offerings. Sense8 has been canceled after two seasons. Unsurprisingly, the program’s devoted fanbase is less than thrilled with the decision.

The creation of Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski and J. Michael Straczynski, Sense8 was sci-fi™ that earned somewhat mixed responses from critics, while receiving massive praise for making LGBTQ2 characters, storylines and issues an unapologetic pillar of the program. Fans of the show (Sense8 fans are among as devoted a lot as you’ll find online) took to Twitter to express their disappointment that Netflix would put this distinctive brand of storytelling to an end. Having the news arrive at the start of a month dedicated to LGBTQ2 pride only adds to the gut punch.

Fans weren’t the only ones commenting on Netflix ushering away Sense8. In addition to a farewell message from the program’s official Twitter site, members of the cast also shared their sadness in having to say goodbye to the show.

As is customary with canceled shows in the ’10s, there’s always that familiar ray of hope that another service might (MIGHT) snatch Sense8 up for a new season. Whether that comes into being is a whole other wait-and-see story.
