We all know Mark Ruffalo’s version of the Hulk will be getting his own movie — Marvel just wants to let the stink from the Eric Bana and Edward Norton versions dissipate a bit. Last year rumors starting burbling up that a new Hulk movie would be happening sometime after Avengers: Age of Ultron and that it would be based on the fan-favorite Planet Hulk storyline.
For the uninitiated, Planet Hulk involved The Illuminati (a shadowy group of the planet’s most powerful heroes) exiling Hulk on a distant planet because he was too much of an unpredictable jerk to have around. Of course Hulk promptly takes over the planet and then returns for revenge. It was a fantastic, epic story, but in an interview with MTV news Mark Ruffalo shot down hopes of a movie version…
“I don’t think Planet Hulk is the way to go yet. I think you need more Banner. The whole thing is just him as Hulk, on a planet, fighting other gladiators.”
Another unspoken problem with Planet Hulk is that “guy gets stranded on distant planet and engages in gladiator battles” probably sounds way too much like John Carter for Disney’s tastes. So, no Planet Hulk anytime too soon, but who knows — maybe it’s still in the plan for sometime before 2028.
