Before Mike Will Made It’s producer drop made my heart go a flutter, there was the 808 Mafia. The digitally-enhanced, little voice saying “808 Mafia” has always created a heightened sense of anticipation for whatever new production gem was about to pound my ears and chest. Co-founded by Lex Luger and Southside, the production super group is duplicated and mimicked by many, today more so than ever by those who label themselves as producer of trap yet nothing tops the originators.
Featuring themselves as well as the many members of the 808 Mafia, the sequel to last year tape is dope because it’s largely instrumental, and as a result, struggle free. The highlight is “Drowning Angels,” Fuse’s wonderfully futuristic beat that takes Madonna to the trap. I have a feeling that 808 Mafia II will hit especially hard in the gym.
