You guys! It’s finally happened! 40 years after the release of 2001: A Space OdysseyStanley Kubrick‘s masterpiece has a bright, shiny new trailer that we can all drool over. The Hollywood Reporter posted the trailer earlier today:

Ahead of the digitally restored film’s special limited U.K. release on Nov. 28 as part of the British Film Institute’s “Sci-Fi: Days of Fears and Wonder” season, a new trailer commission by the BFI and Warner Bros. has now been unveiled. Created by Ignition Creative London, the trailer is the first for the title in four decades and uses Hal as the central figure to create an intensely eerie experience.

In a statement released Tuesday, Jan Harlan, Kubrick’s executive producer, described the clip as “the best trailer for this film I have ever seen! To use Hal’s voice is brilliant.”

You ever watch a Kubrick film and think to yourself “yeah it’s a good movie, but when is someone gonna make a new trailer for this f*cker?” I do. Every time I watch an old movie, or listen to an old record, or eat an old McRib sandwich I think say “this is great, but I wish the advertisements for this product could somehow be updated for a new generation.” I mean, you can’t just say “hooray, the McRib is back!” when there are millions of children all over the world who didn’t even know the McRib ever existed in the first place. You can’t bank on the older generations’ adulation of the McRib to be the sole selling point of the ad. Today’s youth (millenniumimals) are not going to buy a McRib just because their parents swear by it. If that were the case, kids today would still be popping ‘ludes and driving Yugos, just like ma and pop used to do. No, you’ve got to highlight what makes the McRib so damn tasty. Onions. Pickles. Barbecue sauce. Restructured pork. You’ve got to tell these kids “HEY, THIS AIN’T YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S BARBECUE PORK SANDWICH!” even if it is exactly your grandmother’s barbecue pork sandwich. And that’s why I love this new trailer for 2001: A Space Odyssey. It mashes up all that was iconic and memorable from my favorite Kubrick film into a mosaic so stunning that if you haven’t seen the movie, you’ll certainly be compelled to do so. And if you have seen it, you’ll certainly want to see it again. Sure, it’s the same pork sandwich I’ve eaten year after year, but it’s been a few months since I’ve last had one and I think it’s time again for me to relive the magic and the joy.
