American Sniper is making headlines, earning $137 million and sparking a new front in the culture war, so it was as good a time as any to release the trailer for a film where Sean Penn plays a sniper. Called simply Gunman, the Pierre Morel film is about an assassination WITH CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES!

Adapting Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel The Prone Gunman, the Pierre Morel film stars Penn as a former special forces soldier and military contractor suffering from post-traumatic stress who tries to get back with his long-time love, but first has to clear his name in a race across Europe. [THR]

It also stars Javier Bardem, who seems like he’s not hamming it up nearly enough. Bro, you know this is a Pierre Morel movie, right? Morel, of course, is best known for directing Taken, and Gunman certainly looks like Sean Penn trying to get some of that sweet, sweet Liam Neeson money (with a heavy helping of Bourne for good measure). I love picturing the Sean Penn version of Taken.

(speaking gruffly into phone) “What I do have is a particular set of skills.” (*calmly removes shoe and hits himself in the head with it*) “Did you hear that? That was my skull.” (*terrorists hang up in fear*)

Opens March 20.
