Hey, Five Games is back! Hopefully I’ll have more games to fill out these articles in 2015 than I did in 2014.
As always, I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…
This Week’s Robo-Platformer
Grow Home (PC, Feb. 4th)
Here’s an interesting one – Grow Home looks like a stylish, indie PC platformer, but it’s actually the work of mega-publisher Ubisoft. I guess after the Assassin’s Creed Unity debacle, Ubisoft decided they needed to take a step back and express their more artistic side briefly. In Grow Home you control adorable little robot Bud, as he climbs a giant beanstalk. Bud is procedurally animated, so you have a lot of control over how you climb, and you can control the way the beanstalk grows too. Definitely feels a bit of a tech demo for future Assassin’s Creed/Prince of Persia games. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s Pretty 2D Indie Game
Apotheon (PC & PS4, Feb. 3rd)
We showed you Apotheon and it’s beautiful Greek fresco-inspired art style way back in 2012, and now, nearly two-and-a-half years later, the game has finally come to fruition. Aside from the cool art style, it seems like Apotheon will be a pretty solid little Metroidvania style platformer. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s Weird Japanese Thing
Criminal Girls: Invite Only (PS Vita, Feb. 3rd)
Okay, this one might just snag the trophy for most only in Japan game description ever – Criminal Girls is basically an interactive women in prison movie, except the prison is in hell and the women are all cutesy anime characters. Apparently the original Japanese version of the game allowed you to mete out BDSM-style punishments on the prisoners, but that, um, interesting bullet-point has been toned down for the American version of the game. Yup, I’m sure this game is 100% wholesome now. Buy it for the kids.
This Week’s Pizza Delivery Game
Pizzarian (PC, Feb. 3rd)
Ever wanted to pull a Phillip J. Fry and become an intergalactic pizza delivery boy? Well, Pizzarian allows you to do exactly that. The game combines a little bit of strategy, some arcade action and an old-school Game Boy-esque visual style to create the best darn space pizza delivery game you’re likely to find. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
Pick of the Week
Warning: The following trailer might contain some Episode 1 spoilers.
Game of Thrones: Episode 2 – The Lost Lords (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 & PS4, Jan. 27th)
Telltale’s Game of Thrones series continues on with the further adventures and misadventures of the Forrester family. More scheming, back stabbing, front stabbing, Tyrion Lannister and, from the look of things, a good bit of Jon Snow action. What more could you want?
An indie heavy Five Games, but trust me, things are getting busy next week. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
