Being a member of the scouts is about more than merit badges; it’s about teamwork, molding young men, and sharing in the bountiful treasure chest that nature has to offer. But for one Cub Scout troop in California, sh*t got a little too bountiful after a group of 9- and 10-year-old children and their handlers wandered onto Black’s Beach — a nude beach — while hiking Torrey Pines State Beach.
Here’s a statement from the Boy Scouts of America, which was probably typed by an adult that was wearing a neckerchief.
“During a planned hiking trip at Torrey Pines State Beach, a local Cub Scout Pack encountered some individuals who were inappropriately dressed. This outing, involving both parents and adult volunteer leaders, was quickly rerouted to protect the youth. Following the trip, both San Diego-Imperial Council and Pack leadership met with parents to discuss the events and determine if further action was needed. Together we concluded that proper protocol had been observed and appropriate steps were taken in this matter.”
“Individuals who were inappropriately dressed.” Ew, judgement much? The consenting adults that were at the nude beach aren’t villains, they weren’t expecting to have their party crashed by a group of kids. And they weren’t inappropriately dressed for a nude beach unless they were wearing a full length coyote coat and an urban sombrero.
Look, I get that this isn’t a good situation and I get why people are up in arms. Kids shouldn’t be exposed to things like nude beaches and old balls, but this is what happens when you take them away from their ultra violent video games and out into nature.
As for the scout leader, he isn’t going to face any discipline. But a half-identified sunbather that spoke with ABC 10 News probably wouldn’t be too keen with that decision. He contended that the field trip through Gomorrah could have been avoided if only people would have heeded the naked butts and turned around. Advice that we could have all used at one time in our lives, I’m sure.
