Cynics, look away — this story is for softies only. Floyd and Violet Hartwig, a California couple married for 67 years, passed away on February 11 while holding hands in their home. Floyd, 90, who had been diagnosed with kidney failure, died first. Violet, 89, died five hours later. She’d been suffering from the effects of dementia and multiple strokes.

According to family, the two had known each other since they were children. They married in 1947 after Floyd returned from serving in the Navy during World War II. They didn’t live a flashy life, but it was the life they wanted. In the many years to come, the Hartwigs would have three children, four grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Just in case you were losing all hope in love, here’s a little glimmer of hope — no Nicholas Sparks required.
