Above you’ll find one of the greatest sketches to ever come out of the Comedy Central sketch series, Key & Peele. Since its debut, “Substitute Teacher” has accumulated over 72 million hits on YouTube. You simply can’t buy that kind of recognition, so of course the big wigs at Paramount are interested in turning the sketch into a feature film.
From Deadline:
Keegan-Michael Key will reprise his role as as the over-the-top substitute Mr. Garvey, and Jordan Peele will portray a rival teacher determined to be the students’ favorite. Script will be written by Rich Talarico and Alex Rubens, who are co-producers of Key & Peele, which returns for its fifth season on Comedy Central in July. Key and Peele will produce alongside 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Levine and Principato Young Entertainment’s Peter Principato, Paul Young, and Joel Zadak. Will Rack is overseeing for 21 Laps.
Before anyone gets up in arms about Paramount “forcing” the creative team to turn the famed sketch into a money-grubbing feature film, it should be noted that Key, Peele, Rubens, and show director Peter Atencio are already set up to shoot an original comedy, Keanu, at New Line about a group of friends trying to retrieve a stolen kitty by posing as drug dealers. So, while the two films are at different studios, we as the audience aren’t going to be relegated to only seeing big screen adaptation of show sketches to get the dynamic duo into theaters.
Also, the fact that the movie is being written by writers of the show is a big plus. If anyone’s going to get the feel of Mr. Garvey right, it’s them. So, with all that said, here’s hoping for a film that knocks our socks off as much as the origin sketch (and its follow-up) did.
