A Compendium of Cool Comics Cosplay – August 5th

We return to our regularly scheduled comic book cosplay after last week’s Avengers themed deviation. This week we’ve picked a selection of what we think is the best of the costumed community, as seen at various events and online activities. There’s some fantastic cosplayers working in the superhero and comics genre that we’re casting the focus on each week in this regular feature.
Gamma Squad is committed to giving a voice to the cosplay community. Each week there is a spotlight on our favorite costumes and a monthly cosplay contest in which we’d love for cosplayers to participate. We’ll be picking a theme for each month and inviting cosplayers, costumers and photographers to submit related pictures of their work to our Flickr group to be considered. We’ll then pick our top choices and post them on Gamma Squad for the adoration of all.
The themes for the upcoming months are:

  • August: The Walking Dead
  • September: The DC Reboot
  • But in the meantime, let’s continue with this week’s selection!

Batgirl cosplay by aigue-marine. Photos + Edit by Acorea. Source: Tumblr

Aigue-Marine is getting a lot of attention from fans of the Stephanie Brown version of Batgirl and it’s easy to see why, with this costume. Unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, she’s obviously put an incredible amount of work into her cosplay.

The Vision Cosplay at C2E2 2011. Photo by Anime Nut. Source: Flickr

Not surprisingly, Vision is one of the most unusual Avengers to see cosplayed. There’s such an amount of detailing that goes into getting the costume right, that all credit must go to this creative cosplayer for pulling it off. So very shiiiiny.

Mary Marvel cosplay at Dragon*Con 2009. Submitted to our Flickr group by theno2fan. Source: Flickr

A surprisingly complicated costume from this Mary Marvel cosplayer and it’s certainly impressive. SHAZAM! indeed. Whatever the heck that means.

Taskmaster Cosplay by Greenarrowfl of TheSuperheroCostumingForum. Source: The Superhero Costuming Forum

The Superhero Costuming Forum is home to many creative cosplayers, who produce some excellent work of mainstream and more obscure characters. Taskmaster is probably edging towards the obscure, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be the basis for a kick-ass costume from one of the forum’s most prolific cosplayers.

Zinda Blake’s been an integral part of the recent Birds of Prey team, so it’s not surprising to see that many cosplayers love to put their own spin on the costume. We’re not sure whether it’s more appropriate to salute or applaud.

Ramona Flowers and Scott Pilgrim Cosplay by AngelicPara and boyfriend Justin on Deviantart. Source: Deviantart

Some great cosplay that’s taken to the next level by some creative setting, recreating this scene from the Scott Pilgrim series.

Dark Supergirl Cosplay by Minakolabelle. Photos by Still Visions. Source: Stillvisions.net

Great cosplay and great photography combine in this piece, putting a darker spin on the standard Supergirl costume, adding more than a hint of kick-assery.

Longshot Cosplay at Dragon*Con 2008. Photo by Foenix. Source: Flickr

The mullettastic mid-eighties X-man is resurrected by this cosplayer. We have to applaud him for his willingness to fully embrace the cheese.

Jennifer Wenger as Wonder Woman from DC’s Ame-Comi line at San Diego Comic-Con. Photo by Flickr’s Jason.E.N. Source: Flickr

This cosplay of the Wonder Woman design from DC’s Ame-Comi line has to be applauded for creativity and costuming skills if not necessarily for practicality when kicking ass.

Black Cat and Batwoman cosplay at San Diego Comic-Con by Alex & Juli of Twin Bee. Photo by Jason Ozaeta. Source: Flickr

Cross-company cosplay by Twin Bee. And, yes, they are actually twins. And apparently also share a passion for cosplay and comic books. Awesome stuff, guys!
