I’m a big fan of Telltale Games. Really, any company trying to breath some life into adventure gaming (one of my favorite genres) scores brownie points with me, but as a bonus Telltale’s games have all been pretty good. Well, up until now that is. Their latest title, Jurassic Park, is apparently somewhat of a misstep, but oh well. You win some, you lose some, right? Unfortunately, it seems several Telltale employees had a premonition bad reviews were on the way and tried to artificially jack-up Jurassic Park’s Metacritic user score by posting a number of perfect 10 reviews (without mentioning they work for the developer).
The main thing that tipped off Metacritic to these reviews not being legit? They were too well written. Also they were posted before the game actually came out. Oh, uh, and the reviewers went with usernames that could easily be tracked back to them with a simple Google search.
Whoops. Come on guys, if you’re going to screw with Metacritic user reviews (which you really, really shouldn’t be bothering with in the first place) put a little more effort into your skulduggery. In the end this has, of course, all backfired horribly. Since evidence of the Telltale employee reviews surfaced, users have bombed Jurassic Park with “1” reviews and now the game sits at a user score of 3.1.
Sigh. I’m disappointed in you Telltale, but if you make me another new Monkey Island game I’ll forgive you.
