Making “piggyback art” requires taking a pre-existing work of art and adding to it, which is the best possible use for the paintings at Goodwill (and I have the crappy landscape painting with Cthulhu added to it hanging on my wall to prove it). Alex Gross has applied this piggyback art aesthetic to antique cabinet card photographs, transforming these vintage photos into his “Heroes, Villains, and Monsters” series. His work will be on exhibit at the Jonathan Levine Gallery in LA starting February 25th, and Gross also sells giclée print sets of his modified cabinet cards at his website (here, here, and here).
