Donald Trump is truly on fire in a strange way at tonight’s second presidential debate. Months after a Trump surrogate said Captain Khan’s father didn’t deserve to be a Gold Star parent and mocked the mother of Captain Khan in a fit of anti-Muslim rhetoric, he has tripled down with his comments regarding the family. Tonight, he made a claim that no one could ever challenge because it’s utterly ridiculous. He said Khan would still be alive if he was president at the time. Specifically, 2004. He’s blaming Clinton and Obama for what he considers a presidential problem four years before Obama was president and Clinton was secretary of state:
Moderator: your running mate said this week that the Muslim ban was no longer your position. Is that correct, and if it is, was it a mistake to have a religious test?
Trump: First of all, Captain Khan is an American hero. And if I were president at that time he would be alive today. Unlike her, who voted for the war without knowing what she was doing, I would not have our people in Iraq. Iraq was a disaster.
This flies in the face of his comments to Howard Stern which he supported going into Iraq. Furthermore, this implies in retrospect that he would’ve not acted and gone to war despite a lack of evidence at the time.
