Melania Trump on online bullying: “Our culture has gotten too mean & too rough, especially to children & teenagers” https://t.co/QgO6iPIUnU
— NBC News (@NBCNews) November 3, 2016
During a highly publicized speech in the affluent Philadelphia suburb of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, Melania Trump touted the many accomplishments and campaign promises of her husband, Donald Trump. The potential next First Lady of the United States also lauded several initiatives she herself would spearhead should the American people decided to vote the Republican nominee into the White House on November 8th. One of these measures, which she delivered without a detectable ounce of irony in her voice, concerned the culture of online bullying propagated by antagonists “with no name” on social media websites like Twitter.
No, seriously — that’s what she said.
“Our culture has gotten too mean and too rough, especially to children and teenagers,” Melania told the crowd. “It is never okay when a 12-year-old girl or boy is mocked, bullied or attacked. It is terrible when that happens on the playground, and it is absolutely unacceptable when it’s done by someone with no name hiding on the Internet.”
Considering Donald’s penchant for using his rally speeches and Twitter account to literally bully opponents and critics with spoken, tweeted and retweeted threats, Melania (and her speechwriters) came off as outright oblivious to the stark contrast her remarks portrayed. The apparent lack of awareness — intentional or otherwise — also caught the attention of journalists and lay viewers, who appropriately took to Twitter to respond:
