I have a sneaking suspicion that Minnesota state Representative Steve Simon could be on the verge of becoming a viral video star in the wake of the speech gave yesterday in a hearing before a House panel on Minnesota’s ban on same-sex marriage, one in which he posed a simple, logical set of questions in a sincere, reasoned way that will surely have right-wingers butt-hurt over it.
Speaking to the body’s religious conservatives — those who believe that homosexuality is an abomination loathed by the angry, vengeful God who created the homosexuals — Simon said this…
Ask yourself, if it’s true that sex orientation is innate, is God-given, then what does it mean to the moral force of your argument? To put it in the vernacular, what I would ask is, ‘How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around? How many gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether the living of their lives the way they wish as long as they don’t harm others is Godly, holy, happy, glorious, thing?
That sound you hear is a bunch of Jesus freaks’ heads exploding. Here’s the video of Simon’s smart, reasoned speech, which drew applause from some of his colleagues:
Sadly though, Simon’s speech had little effect on the room’s regressives — the panel voted in favor of a ban on gay marriage in the state.
