(Skip to 3:21 for the West Side Story news)
This is one of those headlines where as I was writing it, I realized that only a handful of movie goers will actually give a sh*t. But I really don’t give a sh*t who gives a sh*t other than the people who give a sh*t about Bernstein and Sondheim’s classic musical West Side Story (a musical which is pretty much unanimously considered one of the greatest of all time [GOAT].) And to have a clip of Steven Spielberg (who is also considered a GOAT) mentioning even just a casual interest in directing a version of West Side Story, well that’s something worth sharing with the handful of movie goers who will care. That’s some GOAT on GOAT action (click that link, I dare you) and there is nothing that makes me more excited than two GOATS going balls deep into each other to make something amazing (probably another GOAT). Kevin Jagernauth shared this exciting news over at Indiewire:
Remember those reports in the spring that the director was eyeballing a redo of Robert Wise‘s classic “West Side Story“? Well, it would seem it’s still on the brain.
In a recent interview on “Good Morning America” alongside Oprah Winfrey to promote “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” the director was asked about “West Side Story,” and he confirmed it was something he was still interested in. “Well you know something, ‘West Side Story’ is one of my favourite Broadway musicals and one of the greatest pieces of musical literature, my goodness, one of the greatest scores and some of the greatest lyrics ever written for a musical so just let me put it this way: it’s on my mind,” he said. And it’s kinda curious in that statement he didn’t once mention the 1961 movie….
I wouldn’t focus too much on Spielberg not mentioning the Robert Wise film – I’m certain he’s seen it. And I’m even more certain that he loves it. How could he not? How could anyone not? It’s the bomb! If you are one of those people who’s avoided seeing West Side Story because you’ve only ever seen that shitty Gap commercial for khakis, then I implore you to watch the video below. It’ll change your opinion.
