The big question with Pixar is whether Pixar as we’ve come to know it actually exists, or if it’s just a pretty box Disney bought to pump crap into. Maybe Pixar’s latest, The Good Dinosaur can help answer that question. Opening November 25th, it’s directed by Peter Sohn, previously of Partly Cloudy, the short that was attached to Up, and it imagines a world where the asteroid never struck and humans and dinosaurs live together.
“The Good Dinosaur” asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of. [Official Synopsis]
Verdict on the trailer: …eh?
It doesn’t look like there’s a ton going on, plot-wise (I like it better when the characters actually go on adventures and make me feel wonder rather than have it just shout adventure! wonder! at me, but I’ll withhold judgment until we see the actual film), and the music sort of makes me feel like I’m watching Beasts of the Southern Wild For Kids. But the character design already looks more interesting than Inside Out (save for Bing Bong).
It looks like they made the backgrounds hyperrealistic but left the characters cartoony, which is certainly a choice. Could be cool, I guess? It’s sort of hard to say when the trailer just shouts “FEELS! FEEEEEELS! ALLLLL THE FEEEEEEEELS!”
