In the new trailer for writer/director David Gilroy’s thriller Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal is just another Los Angeles bro trying to get a seat at the high-stakes table of crime journalism. But just as Gyllenhaal’s Lou Bloom is looking to get in on the ground floor, he’s discovering the hard truth of the media business – there just aren’t enough J-O-Bs to go around. His solution? Buy a camera, team up with a guy who has GPS on his phone, and drive around chasing crimes as they happen to beat the actual media to the punch. Naturally, the results are hilarious…ly terrifying.
“Nightcrawler” is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling — where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.
That’s a shame. I was hoping it was a movie about Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo crawling around on the floor in the dark and/or teleporting while fighting the X-Men’s enemies.
