Back in March, Ricky Gervais revealed in a conversation about his performances as David Brent with the band Foregone Conclusion that he had much bigger plans for the hilarious character from BBC Two’s The Office. While tickets for his concerts were selling as fast as he could book them, Gervais had a mockumentary in mind, as he wanted to tell the story of what happened to Brent in the years after he got the boot from Wernham Hogg. That story? Brent hitting the road with his band and playing to near-empty shows while trying to live his pathetic, middle-aged rock star dream.
Now, Gervais can finally stop talking about this idea, because it’s actually going to happen, and The Telegraph reported that filming is set to begin in the UK next year. As for the plot of this “much sadder and more poignant” mockumentary, it might be even more pathetic than we’d ever expect from David Brent.
“He thinks it’ll be like Scorsese filming the Rolling Stones, but it turns out to be a ‘where are they now’ documentary. He has to take a few weeks off work and cash in a couple of pensions, because the session musicians in the band are costing him more than he’s getting in ticket sales. Tragic.”(Via The Telegraph)
If it ends with a murder-suicide pact with Michael Scott, this could end up being one of the greatest movies ever made.
