If you’ve watched the trailer for the Michael Fassbender-starring Assassin’s Creed movie, you’d be forgiven for thinking most of the movie takes place in the past during the Spanish Inquisition. I mean, basically all the significant action from the trailer and all the promotional materials focus on Fassbender in his hood and cloak and the historical time period. Well get ready for some disappointment, history buffs.
In a recent interview, Assassin’s Creed producer Pat Crowley let slip that the majority of the movie will take place during the present day. He went so far as to break it down – 65 percent in the present and 35 percent in the past. That’s probably not a ratio most fans of the Assassin’s Creed games were hoping for.
For those not familiar with the Assassin’s Creed games, they feature people from a modern, near-future era reliving “ancestral memories” using a device called the Animus. Typically the modern stuff is just a framing device, with 90 percent of the action taking place during various historical time periods. In more recent games, the modern portion has been even further dialed back. Most people haven’t missed it. The present day sections just isn’t as exciting as boarding pirate ships or testing flying machines with Leonardo da Vinci, y’know?
The fact that the Assassin’s Creed movie is mostly modern doesn’t sound great to most, but it was probably unavoidable. Recreating historical time periods is expensive! Let’s just hope the movie takes advantage of what little time it has with Michael Fassbender in his hood.
