PCs, handhelds, mobile, console, indies, triple A, free-to-play — the gaming scene gets more diverse and difficult to follow by the day, but I’m thankfully here every week to guide you through what’s happening with games.
As always, I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…
This Week’s Episodic Game
Tales From the Borderlands: Episode 3 – Catch a Ride (PC, Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 & PS4, June 23)
The action, intrigue and general wackiness of Telltale’s episodic Borderlands adventures continues this week with Episode 3, entitled Catch a Ride. As is always the case with Telltale games, you’ll have to wait an extra day if you’re playing on Xbox platforms.
This Week’s City-Builder
Lethis: Path of Progress (PC, June 25)
Yearning for some Sim City-esque fun, but have no outlet because the last actual Sim City game sucked? Well, Lethis: Path of Progress might be for you. It’s an old-school, 2D city building game, set in a Victorian steampunk universe. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s Narrative Adventure Game
Her Story (PC & Mac, June 24)
In Her Story, you play as a police archivist, searching through footage of a woman who was interviewed seven times back in 1994 about the disappearance of her husband. You enter search terms, get short video clips, and slowly but surely try to piece together this woman’s story. Of course, different people may come to different conclusions. Her Story certainly looks unique, and it’s already picking up a lot of attention. Here’s the game’s Steam page.
This Week’s MMO Expansion
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward (PC, PS3 & PS4, June 23)
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is the first big expansion pack for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which itself was a revamp/expansion of the original Final Fantasy XIV. Heavensward promises an all-new area to explore, a major expansion to the story and, of course, new races, jobs, level caps and all sorts of other goodies. I’m not a big MMO guy, but I’m sure this is all very exciting for Final Fantasy XIV fans.
Pick of the Week
Batman: Arkham Knight (PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One & PS4, June 23)
Come on, do I really need to write a blurb explaining why you should buy Batman: Arkham Knight? You know, the new gorgeous Batman game that ties up the legendary Arkham series and lets you drive anywhere in maybe the most badass Batmobile to date? I guessing you’re already on board. Clear your gaming plates so you can start working on getting 100 percent completion tomorrow!
After some slow pre-E3 weeks, we’re back on track in a big way. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
